Emma Raducanu Triumphs at the 2026 Australian Open, Overcoming an Uneasy Start to Advance
In an exhilarating display of resilience, British tennis star Emma Raducanu shook off a rocky beginning to secure her place in the second round of the Australian Open by defeating Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
This marks Raducanu's first seeding at a Grand Slam event since her groundbreaking win at the 2022 US Open. However, her initial performance raised eyebrows as she struggled against the world number 196, looking somewhat out of sorts after dropping her serve early in the match.
But here's where it gets interesting: Raducanu turned things around spectacularly on the iconic Margaret Court Arena. After finding her footing, she unleashed an impressive streak of seven consecutive games, ultimately clinching the match with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
"I’m really pleased to have made it through today’s match. Right from the start, I felt she was playing exceptionally well," said Raducanu, who is seeded 28th in this tournament. "I’m proud of how I managed to fight back during the first set."
The 23-year-old athlete is now set to face Austrian player Anastasia Potapova in the next round, with a potential showdown against world number one Aryna Sabalenka looming in the third round. Raducanu's journey through 2025 was promising, as she made significant strides back into the top 30 rankings and participated in more matches than ever before in her career.
Yet, the preparation for this season was not without its challenges. The technical improvements she had planned to work on with her coach, Francisco Roig—who played a vital role in Rafael Nadal’s success with 16 out of his 22 major titles—were hindered due to a foot injury. Arriving in Melbourne with only one win in her recent matches, Raducanu faced a tough loss against world number 204 Taylah Preston in Hobart just prior to the tournament, which cast doubts on her readiness.
Initially, it seemed that another upset could be on the horizon. Sawangkaew, competing in her first Grand Slam main draw, came out strong, showcasing aggressive returns and clever net play that put Raducanu on the defensive. She managed to break Raducanu’s serve in the third game and nearly took a commanding 4-1 lead. However, Raducanu countered with a series of remarkable winners, which helped her regain composure and avoid falling further behind.
The momentum shifted as Raducanu leveled the set at 4-4, subsequently breaking Sawangkaew again to take the first set. Continuing her dominance, Raducanu displayed her power in the second set, hitting 17 winners compared to Sawangkaew’s nine and winning 27 out of 40 points. She sealed her victory in style with an ace, a fitting end to a hard-fought match.
"She’s playing some incredible tennis that far exceeds her current ranking, so I genuinely believe she will achieve great things this year," Raducanu remarked, highlighting her opponent’s potential.
